WA2IAC's HTX-10 Transceiver

Radio Shack's HTX-10 10 Meter Transceiver is an inexpensive transceiver aimed at mobile use. It sold new for a top price of around $159. Used units can be easily found on EBay for around $100. The transceiver was made by a third party, and many units were sold without branding or with branding other than Radio Shack's such as "Titan". At this time, I have no further information on that, but will update this page as time allows. The rig has a bit of a cheesy feel, but it works and I've made DX contacts with it both mobile and fixed. In mobile operation, I use it with a mag mount CB antenna cut down for 10 meter use.

Now that we are entering a new solar maximum, and the MUF (Maximum Usable Frequency) is at or above the 10 meter band, there will be lots of activity for DX, spilling over into increased interest in 10 meters for local use. These rigs will once again come into their own.

Key Specifications:

  • Modes: AM (7 watts), FM, SSB (25 watts)
  • Receiver Sensitivity: 0.5uV for 10 db S/N
  • Receiver Selectivity 50db min, Intermod 60db, S/N 40db min, IF Rejection 70db or better
  • Power: 3 amps max, with SSB gulping 5 amps on peaks (can be powered by a capable cigarette lighter output in a vehicle) at 12-16VDC negative ground.
  • Frequency Range: 28 MHz - 29.699 MHz
  • VFO - Digital PLL with 1KHz steps
  • Tuning steps selectable at 1/10/200 KHz using disgusting detent tuning knob
  • Operating temperature: -4 to 122 degrees F
  • Dimensions: 6 1/16 x 2 3/64 x 9 41/64 inches, 2.65 lbs (1.2kg)
