Removing grub from windows 10 can be frustrating to say the least. I ran into this problem when I was installing Ubuntu to another drive, and the blasted installer put grub on my Windows 10 boot drive. Note that my windows C: drive was NOT clobbered, and I was able to access it through the recover console. You want to go there, type "C:" and then dir. If you see the usual Windows directories, there is hope. First, here are the things I tried that didn't work: There are plenty of articles on the 'net that just don't do it. Microsoft said: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/927392 To do this, type the following commands at the Windows RE command prompt: bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup c: cd boot attrib bcd -s -h -r ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old bootrec /RebuildBcd Heck, my c: volume didn't even have a /boot directory on it. Net Ubuntu said: http://askubuntu.com/questions/429610/uninstall-grub-and-use-windows-bootloader
To do so you will need a windows installation cd/dvd 1: put it in your optical drive and boot from it 2: on the installation screen where it asks you to install windows, click on "Repair Your Computer" on the lower left corner of your screen 3: Now go to command prompt(It probably will show a window saying "Trying to repair windows automatically", close it) and type bootrec/fixmbr 4: after it finishes GRUB is gone and you can now boot into windows directly 5: you have a ubuntu partition left in your computer, that doesn't show in "My Computer", to access that, right click on "My Computer" and Select "Manage" and go to "Disk Management" 6: Select the ubuntu partition and format it to a file system that windows can use. Enjoy
I did not enjoy. I still got the grub loader. Here's how I fied it. I could still access windows by booting the windows loader using grub, I booted up windows and used the "System Configuration" utility. Check out this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/run-selective-startup-system-configuration#1TC=windows-7 see also: http://www.tenforums.com/installation-setup/7100-convert-dual-boot-install-normal-boot.html?s=ba887994a1e5f22dc57ac761cd80b1f7
Follow this procedure to use the process of elimination to identify the problem. Open System Configuration by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking System Configuration. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Click the General tab, click Selective startup, and then SELECT the Load System services and the Load startup items check boxes. ALSO select the Use original boot configuration checkbox. Click Apply. Click OK. Click to Restart. You'll boot up windows, possible with some BIOS related glitching. Reboot again. Go back into the General tab of System Configuration, and click Normal startup, apply, OK, reboot.
