= ISP Best Practices Crib Sheet = I'm looking for a document that covers not only RFC's and ISP should practices, but best practices, particularly what services should be delivered to customers, meeting customer technical expections, and possibly explanations of "why". This is a tall order, apparently. So here is a piecemeal approach. Perhaps I'll write a book. Your comments? You know the address! Please write. In this Not-So-FAQ, I'll write in the context of my "friend" who keeps asking "why?". No, he's not a child. == ISP Definition(s) == * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_service_provider == Well Knowns == === Well Known Services === === Well Known Addresses === === Well Known URLs === == RFCs == RFC's can be found at http://tools.ietf.org/rfc/index but which ones? :-D RFC3013 Recommended Internet Service Provider Security Services and Procedures. T. Killalea. November 2000. (Format: TXT=27905 bytes) (Also BCP0046) (Status: BEST CURRENT PRACTICE) RFC4778 Operational Security Current Practices in Internet Service Provider Environments. M. Kaeo. January 2007. (Format: TXT=88344 bytes) (Status: INFORMATIONAL) == Whois == ISP's that offer BGP routing should have their own Routing Registry to provide a local repository of relevant routing objects [need citation here]. See: www.irr.net Q. Why should (my) RR mirror other registries? See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whois#Thin_and_thick_lookups and describe customer impacts. Well known URLS [including]: * whois: whois.wa2iac.net port 43 * rr.whois.net * rr@wa2iac.net * rpsl@wa2iac.net * ftp://rr.wa2iac.net/pub/wa2iac/dbase/data/ * List of routing registries: http://www.irr.net/docs/list.html == Contacts == ISP's need to maintain various contacts: [general description] [email addresses] [web addresses] == BGP == This is a huge topic. Here are some unreviewed links: * http://archive.apnic.net/meetings/22/docs/tut-routing-pres-bgp-bcp.pdf * http://www.ripe.net/ripe/meetings/regional-meetings/manama-2006/BGPBCP.pdf == Miscellaneous == Many documents on the net found by searching focus on network security in one form or another. It's an interesting statement about the current and recent past of public Internet networks. Unreviewed links: * http://transition.fcc.gov/pshs/docs/csric/CSRIC_WG8_FINAL_REPORT_ISP_NETWORK_PROTECTION_20101213.pdf The following RFC is a reminder that much of what I'd like to have here is buried in various RFC's * Recommended Internet Service Provider Security Services and Procedures http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3013
