== Introduction == In the beginning, those who would nail you to the floor discovered that sometimes your exact location can be determined by your IP address. Not satisfied with uncertanty, these people resorted to self-delusion, wishing that IP address is ALWAYS exact in geolocating. The next step will be lobbying congress to pass legislation REQUIRING that geolocation by IP address be precise. After that come the rectal probes. === IP Geolocation === This section is TBD === HTML5 Geolocation === This is scary stuff, people. TBD === Disabling HTML 5 Location === ==== Firefox ==== Choose where Firefox will say you are: Turn the tables on snoopers! Load this extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/geolocater/ Don't do the stuff below if you use the extension. If you just want to DISABLE geolocation via HTML5, do the following. But be aware that recently some sites and services have begun refusing visitors with geolocation disabled. Yelp! is one of my "favorite examples" of this bad behavior. They want your info, or else no service! For that reason, you may want to consider sending ''false'' information (using the extension above) instead of ''no'' information. * In the URL bar, type about:config * You will get a sickeningly bogus warning "This Will Void Your Warranty" -- TOTALLY misleading to innocent people who want to protect their privacy. Disgusting. Proceed anyway! * Type geo.enabled * Double click on the geo.enabled preference - verify that the state has changed to "disabled" * Right-click on "geo-wifi" which has the value: geoloc://www.google.com/loc/json - should you want to restore it some day. Change it to geoloc://127.0.0.1 - the local loopback - ensures no funnybusiness. I don't trust Firefox anymore. * Location-Aware Browsing is now theoretically disabled, there are still other, perhaps less accurate (or not), techniques that can be used. Remember that just because you've disabled HTML5 geolocation doesn't mean you're safe. Snoopers like the government, business, and criminals, will still try to locate you by your IP address, your use of social media and other popular sites (with or without cookies), or just by matching up your online behavior. ==== Chrome ==== Steps to follow for Chrome vary by revision. Expect the procedure to be different if the version isn't version 26.0.1410.64 m. * Open the “Chrome Options Window”, navigate to the third tab, and click on the “Content settings… ” button. * Scroll down and select "Advanced Settings" * Scroll further down to a button labeled "Content Settings..." Click on the button. * Scroll down to "Location" and click on the radio button labeled "Do not allow any site to track my physical location" * Click on "Manage Exceptions" and delete any sites you don't want to get your location information * Click on Done Pretty well hidden, eh? ==== Internet Explorer ==== In Internet Explorer 9 you can also disable location services. Go into Internet options -> Privacy. Select “Never allow websites to track your physical location.” ==== Opera ==== ==== IOS Devices ==== ==== Android ====
